Holdem Limit In Poker
Warning Cards
Suppose you play with a pair of eights. The flop is queen ten-nine. This has actually hurt your hand. True, a jack will give you a straight, but anyone with a king will make a higher straight. Suppose you stay and an eight is now turned. You have three eights, but there are all sorts of straights out against you.
You play with an ace-jack, and the turn is jack-three two at poker. You probably hold the best hand right now. Several players stay, and the fourth card is a king or queen. You are almost surely beaten by someone right now but still must play along. The fifth card is an ace. There are no flushes possible, and you have what is probably the best two pair, but don't get carried away. Someone might have made an ace-high straight, and it is also possible that someone else had played with five-four and made a small straight.
The Feel of the Game
In Pot Limit or Table Stake Hold'em, if you can get a good idea of any other player's style you have a great advantage against him. Suppose four players stay for the flop, which is nine-five-two of three different suits. The first player proceeds to bet the pot. You know that he never bluffs. In that case, he has at least a nine and higher card. Is he likely to have made two pair? He is known to be a tight player. Unless he was forced to bet blind, you don't have to worry about it. He would not have bet with nine-five, nine-two, or five-two.
Now, suppose that your further observations of this man have shown that he tends to check with really good hands. In that case, you can be sure he doesn't hold three of a kind. Let's take this same situation with you as last bettor. It is checked to you, and your hand is nine-eight. You bet and this man raises you. Get out He's hit trips.
Other Forms of Holdem
In one variation of the game, you have to use both your cards in the showdown. Let's look at a couple of examples. You hold ace-king. The board shows ace-ace-six-six-two. You are going to beat anyone who doesn't hold ace-six, six-six, or two-two since your hand is aces
and sixes with a king kicker.
Let's change the fifth card in the center from a two to a seven. Now anyone with ace-seven, seven-seven, or seven six will beat you in addition to the previously described hands. You can never make a flush unless both your cards are in the same suit, and you can't make a straight unless both your cards fit in it.
Pineapple
Everyone is dealt three cards. You discard one before the flop. This
increases the action until players realize that almost everyone gets something fairly intriguing to start with.
It is most important that you realize that when you are dealt three cards in suit you have to throw one away, materially reducing your chance of making a flush. Also, three of a kind is really hopeless, since you have to throw one away.
Low and High Hold'em
Sometimes the same two will work both ways. Suppose you hold ace-two of hearts and two other cards. The center is any five cards that don't include an ace, a deuce, or a pair and do include three or more hearts. Your ace and deuce guarantee at least a tie for low,
and you. Have the best high hand.
In Australia poker game, bear in mind that any time the board pairs one of your low cards your low hand has been seriously hurt. Of course, if you start with ace-two-three-four and the flop is ace-two-five you have paired twice, but your three-four giving you a wheel and also a straight? In addition, if another ace or deuce hits the table, you use your ace-two to make a full house.
