Five Card Rules
1. Playing open end straight draws. In a limit game of draw poker, there is almost no justification for ever drawing to a country straight. A hand like K-9-8-7-6 is just about always unplayable.
2. Opening in an early position with two small pair. It doesn’t matter whether the game is jacks or better to open (the most common form of draw by a landslide) or guts, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re playing with or without the joker opening with tens and sixes with five or more players still to act is suicidal. You can’t call a raise, and therefore your hand is vulnerable. It’s much, much better to check and see if someone else opens. Five Card Rules
Marginal Hands
Marginal hands are a curse Marginal hand are like pretty women in scanty costumes, standing on street corners, they have no last names, and they suck your money away. They promise you much and deliver little. They look great, but lack substance. They are seductive and cute, yet they devour your bankroll. Now you are warned! You play with them at your own risk in poker. Marginal hands and Women with no last names can offer some entertainment, if you understand them and know how to control them. There is one major difference. The girls will cost you. Careful play on marginal hands can make you some money. Marginal Hands
Poker Holdem
Suppose you play with a pair of eights. The flop is queen ten-nine. This has actually hurt your hand. True, a jack will give you a straight, but anyone with a king will make a higher straight. Suppose you stay and an eight is now turned. You have three eights, but there are all sorts of straights out against you. You play with an ace-jack, and the turn is jack-three two at. You probably hold the best hand right now. Several players stay, and the fourth card is a king or queen. You are almost surely beaten by someone right now but still must play along. The fifth card is an ace. There are no flushes possible, and you have what is probably the best two pair, but don't get carried away. Poker Holdem
Game Probabilities
In poker game the average player would like to know what his chances are of making his straights and flushes starting with various combinations. In studying Table IX the first thing we note is that if we start with three cards of the same suit it is about four and a half to one against our making the flush. Now if our next card is also the same suit, our chance is almost even money; while if it doesn't help us, the chances against us increase to nine to one. Accordingly, if my three cards are all in the same suit, unless the pot is raised I am going to stay and draw a fourth card. But if that fourth card is not in my suit, my participation in that particular pot is ended unless that fourth card happens to give me a pair, in which case. Game Probabilities
Poker Strategy
The good player depends on observations to formulate his strategy. Observation of opponents requires an analytical al technique. Observation of the cards requires a sharp eye. Knowing what his opponents observe also affects his strategy. The good player controls the position of his head and eyes to avoid a direct stare at those opponents who become cautious and less readable when feeling observed. He will, however, stare directly at those players who get nervous and more readable when feeling observed. Poker Strategy
