Good opportunities come and go. Often a new poker game or promotion appears that is quickly analyzed by the pros who find out that it pays well over 100%. It is hit by dozens of skilled players who extract as much as possible before the casinos discovers that it is losing to the players, and soon it is gone.
Can you blame the casinos? Of course not. They have a right to expect a profit on anything they offer, but you have the right to be among those few who profit when such an opportunity arises. But how is that possible? You can keep up with the rapidly changing world of video poker by subscribing to Video Poker Times.
This newsletter has been published bimonthly since 1993. The data in its four to eight (usually six or more) 8.5 x 11 pages are invaluable to all players seeking a profit at video poker. Each issue includes at least one lead article of interest to serious players, often an optimum strategy for a new 1OO%-plus game. The Tidbits column (new opportunities) and Crier's Corner (lost opportunities) will keep you up to date. There's also a Question and Answer column and other valuable information.
Video Poker Software
I am currently in the development stages of Optimum Video Pokerâ„¢, a software package for both the PC and Macintosh platforms that will encompass all of the best features of all currently available programs, plus much more.
For reviews of software packages currently available, refer to issue 3.2 of Video Poker Times. This review is also reproduced in All The Best of Video Poker Times. The best package at the time of that review was Video Poker Tutor. The best programs now on the market are Frugal Video Poker (for Windows only) and Optimum Video Poker (for both Macintosh and Windows).
Video Poker Anomalies & Anecdotes
This new site contains many amusing anecdotes, plus reports from readers of Video Poker Times about suspected anomalies in the machines. Although many players swear that the anomalies exist, we recommend for amusement only.
Video Poker Cue Cards
Laminated, shirt pocket size cue cards have been developed for most of the attractive games. Each card provides an accurate hand rank table for one game and in some cases one or more variations on that online poker game. Many professionals play with a cue card, so don't be embarrassed to use one. All payback percentages shown below assume you've selected the game with the indicated payoff schedule and are playing it according to the strategy given on the card. Typically the quoted payback is about .02% to .05% below maximum payback as computed by game analysis software to allow for human error. If you're perfect, you can gain a bit more than the payback shown, but even if you're human like the rest of us you can easily have a significant edge over the house.
Note: Numbers such as "9/6" following a game name refer to the payoffs that are most frequently changed. For Jacks-or-Better they refer to the full house and flush, respectively; that is, 9/6 means the game pays 9-for-l (45-for-5) for a full house and 6-for-l (30-for-5) for a flush. The cards come with a separate sheet that clarifies the abbreviations and notes. Cards are $4 each, or as low as $3 each for ten or more.
